- secure and easy Internet access for travellers.
Forskningsnettet's iPass service offers a secure and easy Internet connection in airports, hotels, conferences, etc.
In our daily life, it is very important for us to be in contact with the rest of the world - also when we travel. But is is often very expensive for a single institution to supply connection to the Internet to all travelling employees. And it is also complicated for travelling employees. This is for example the case woth Internet connections on mobile phones, connections charged on top of hotel bills, use of credit cards in airports etc. iPass, a service offered by Forskningsnettet gives global access to the Internet. It is easy and user-friendly for employees and at the same time cheaper for the institution.
The collaboration between Forskningsnettet and iPass
Forskningsnettet offers the iPass service in collaboration with the company iPass. iPass has a large network of Internet providers all over the world, and this network covers thousands of connection points. There are connections points in 150 countries. And in 70 countries, iPass users can access broadband connections such as Ethernet or WiFi.
How does iPass work?
To get access to the Internet, you have to install an iPass client (iPass connect) on you windows-operating computer, Mac or PDA. In the client you indicate your location. A list of connection points is then shown. The client contains a phonebook in which you can choose the connection to the nearest Internet provider working with iPass. The phonebook is updated after each call. You can also access the Internet without the client software, but from a common browser, e-g- by connecting to hotspots in the airport etc.
Connection and authorisation
You can establish your connection with a modem, ISDN, Ethernet or wireless (Wi-Fi). Your identity is controlled with a username and a password which are encrypted and sent to your home institution or to UNI-C. Once these are accepted, the Internet provider, who recieves your "call" is notified and opens your connection. You can then open a VPN-client and access the services at your home institution (e.g. e-mail, intranet, etc.)
